    I was teaching at Maktab Anthony Abell, Seria.
    The subjects teaching are Computer Studies, ICT, Basic Computing and Word Processing.

    According the topic about “math use in your work/life”, in computer studies topics, the topics related with math subject are binary number, accounting words in word processing, timing of typing skill and spreadsheet for calculating marks of subjects.

    In teaching, i used technology devices such as projector, good websites like Flash websites for games but related with the subject and simple activity (Hands on) like repair the computer components. Sometimes, we can download any movies from internet like Youtube.com and then show to students but make sure the movie can give more knowledge on Information Technology (IT).

    We use maths in our everyday life. This subject appears in every aspects of art. We are both art teachers and we use this aspects in our drawings and paintings. For example we teach them how to use measurements and calculations in drawings and paintings, basic shapes and perspectives and when designing for a specific theme or artwork. Maths also play an important part when the art topic concerns designing either in the form of 2-D drawings, 3-D drawings or even 4-D artworks.

    We both use technology to help us to present our artwork for example using power point and projector and sometimes showing videos of artists doing their artwork. We use internet for research purposes. For example researching for inspiration or history of art and also design examples for craft works.

    I used Mathematics on my teaching in Plant Technology and Introduction to Computer Aided Drawing (CAD). In Plant Technology i used it on calculating the mass and the heat transfer and for Introduction to CAD i used it to calculates the dimension of the drawing.

    Meanwhile, In my real life i used it to calculate the salary, credit cards, debts and personal loans.

    Technology? Yes of course i used computers on doing my works especially preparing my notes,for teaching and researching information’s.

  8. I used mathematics a lot in the subject that I taught which is called ‘Electrical & Electronic Principles’. I apply some software during teaching, preparing the paperwork and even for my own work, such as Circuit maker, Workbench, MathCad, any word processing program and so on. Moreover, some software I’ve used for simulation in order to visualize the subject theories.

    In life we are attached with mathematics : time, money, measurement, and in everyday life. We were taught maths with talk and chalk, practices on how to do the mathematics and memorise the time table and formulas in order to understand more on mathematics subjects.We were given online quiz /exercise using internet. Calculator and computer desktop as part of technology. There are using projector and also smart board to enhance the technique and effective learning. The other method of introducing effective learning – students are asked to watch a video from internet given by the teacher. There were asked to solve the problems in groups discussion among themselves without asking the teacher.

    Basically I use maths for teaching logo programming for upper primary. In logo they learn how to draw shapes like rectangle, pentagon etc. So they have to know how many sides each shape have. For lower primary they use maths for simple calculation (Addition, subtraction) in MS Excel.

  11. The subjects that i taught namely Electrical & Electronics Principles 1 and 2 are all dealing with numbers and equations. For an examples Simultaneous equation under Kirchhoff Law’s. This subjects required the student to know by heart the basic mathematics especially equations.

    For may daily work routine, I use mathematics to calculate the average mark of my students Assignments, Reports and Projects and also my personnel use. I normally use Microsoft Excel to make my work run smoothly.

    For my teaching, I do appply a little bit of calculation on one of the computer studies topics on Bits and Bytes; for example, students will calculate the number of bits using simple multiplication method or they can use calculator.

    I usually used PowerPoint presentation for the lesson and used online resources as reference for my teaching.

    Q : What Mathematics Do You Teach or Use In Your Work/ Life ? Do You Use Technology?

    Mathematics ? Can say we use Mathematics everyday, everywhere, every activities we still use mathematics even it just simple calculations. Example : We wearing our watch still involve counting(calculation) the time. Overall activities that involved numbering is MATHEMATICS.

    Mathematics in my subject ICT, almost all my ICT lesson I use mathematics. Because all application provide measurement such as do margin, paper printing, number pages, Aligning documentation and etc. All of this activities we can find when we do formatting our documentation. MS Excel or Spreadsheet, I use for my Mark sheet, Pupils data, Graphs and I taught my pupils how to do calculation using Spreadsheet. In MS Excel, the pupils will learns and experienced on how to apply formula in spread sheet such as addition, subtraction, Mutiplication and Division. ( Example : Cell reference formula =A1+A2 ). Using other application also need calculation such as Adobe Photoshop, picture editing and image size, cropping still need calculation. Audacity application, editing sound like cutting the wave that not needed.

    Mathematics in life, of course when we do activity in the kitchen, cutting the vegetable, meat, onion measurement are still involved. When we are driving a car, counting the distance, price of petrol, etc. Our lives are full of mathematics.

  15. mazni says:

    We use mathematics in the sub topic of bit and byte, which 1 byte is equal to 8 bits. we were also use the spreadsheet for students’ project and activity. We use technology in teaching either using projector or IWB (Interactive White Board) to show the presentation to students and teacher, which is more attractive. Technology makes our life easier and smart.

    How are science and mathematics taught in your school?

    I am teaching in Secondary School and generally i am not teaching Science and Mathematics subject.

    In my school, for science subject, mostly they use science lab as their class. Other than that, they learn theory, most of the time they learn practically.

    Moreover, for Mathematics subject, teachers not only teach the students in class. The teachers also take initiative to teach the students alternatively since some students have problem in understanding this subject. Therefore, the teachers put some formula such as;Multiple, Subtract, Addition, on the stairway and they can read as they go up to the stair.

    I am teaching Commercial Studies in my work place and i apply mathematics in calculating discounts, installment trading, and book keeping.

    I use Multimeter for measuring Current and Voltage because for the building services I need to check the loading of current before planning,design and installation the Light fitting and socket outlet where as for the measuring tape also needed to measure room size for number of air-condition.

    I use telephones, mobile phone and email to receive and reply complain where as walkie-talkie to communicate with each other in the same department.

  18. In the past:
    Throughout my childhood, Science and Maths are taught by using handouts and books. Teachers explained to us by using whiteboard, marker pens and teacher-student centred. When it comes to practical, instruments and materials were used in order to understand more of the learning process. When I was in Primary school, I learnt both by using books and exercises. Teachers explained us by using whiteboard and marker pen. It was different application when I was in Secondary and Tertiary Education, where we were taught how to do practical in Labs and using handouts for Maths and Science. I like Science more than Maths because Science is using more practical in Labs where we had to use real equipments and taught us how to handle them with care.

    In the present:
    There’s no much different when my ex-teachers have taught me compared to what method I use to teach my students nowadays. I teach Numeracy and Accounts for Secretarial Studies Students by using handouts, exercises, whiteboard and marker pen. To teach these subjects, to add on the method of teaching, everything cannot be written on whiteboard, therefore, I use software like Microsoft Words and Excel to provide the notes. Excel is appropriate to make necessary calculations for students’ marks and computing the accounts part. Sometimes, I search some pictures and illustration in the internet for Numeracy and Accounts subject to add into the notes to make the students more interested and understood. Apart from teaching this subject, I use Excel to do my administrative works like finance job as I am the Student Council Coordinator and I handle with finance work to compute and monitor students’ funds.

  19. What mathematics do you teach or use in your work/life? Do you use technology? How do you use technology to help you?

    In commercial studies, i use to teach how to calculate installment trading, discount trade, basic calculation on their expenses and book keeping. The purpose of teaching of this calculation it is a part of syllabus.

    I also teach Basic Accounting for vocational students. In this subject, a lot of format to be taught.

    When giving exercises to the students in class, they have to do same format with different questions. The problem is the students complaining about they tired of doing same format.

    Therefore, I apply technology in this subject by using computer (Microsoft Excel). They have difficulty in using Excel at beginning. However after sometimes, they get used to it and they preferred to use computer rather than writing.

    The students get benefits by as they can save time in doing their exercises and they can learn using excel and they found it is much easier.

    What they have to do they just learn the function in the spreadsheet.

    In work life, i use computer to key in all the students marks and use function to calculate the students average marks.

    For SPN 21, we have to key in all the information of students marks individually according to the subject and overall subject in the Microsoft Access.

  20. Q1.How is Science & Math are taught in your school?

    Ans: Math is a CORE subject in the school. Meaning that, it is a must for the student to take that unit. Meanwhile for Science it is an essential.

    Q2.How do you learn Math & Science in your school?
    Ans: As far as I concerns, both of this subjects are taught using workbook and for Science Unit they also run a group practical. They do assess it using group presentations for both units.

    Q3.Which parts do you like & unlike?
    Ans: Well, I can says that both of the subject I likes. But between Math & Science subject, the subject that I like most is Science. This is because that more hands-on/ practical were done. For my point of view, more hands-on makes student understand more easily and gain more interest towards this subject.

  21. 1. How are Science & Mathematics are tough in your school?
    Ans: In Jefri Bolkiah engineering College, Science and Mathematics is very important subjects. The instructors are using their ability on teaching the students by using the own knowledge which is by forming the Mathematics & Science Quiz,giving an awards who got the best results, gives more exercises by using the Microsoft excel and beside it the college were providing the workbooks for the students.

    2. How do you learn Mathematics & Science in your school?
    Ans: In my previous school, I have learned the mathematics and science subjects by using the workbooks and doing the experiments.

    3. Which part do you like & which parts do you unlike?
    Ans: i prefer the Science subject because it is easy to understand in terms on doing the experiment by ourselves but for the mathematics subject it is very toughs where we have to memories the formula, applying the numeracy such as algebra, integrations etc.

    Q : What Mathematics Do You Teach or Use In Your Work/ Life ? Do You Use Technology?

    ~*In our everyday life*~

    What is Mathematics/Maths? Everyone knows that Mathematics/Maths is related with numbers. Do we use Maths everyday? Yes! Without realizing, we use maths everyday ever since we were born such as our date of birth, time of birth, weight, height, body temperature and counting heart beat. We also use technology to measure all of this. Clock/watch for date and time of birth, weight and height scale to measure weight and height, digital clinical thermometer to measure body temperature and multi function health monitor to measure heart beat.

    ~*In my teaching*~

    Instead of using calculator, I usually used visual stimuli and chalk and talk method. For visual stimuli method, I used mathematics teaching aids such as geometrical instruments for measuring angles and shapes, weight scale for measuring weight and etc. Sometimes I also used Power Point presentation for quizzes to test students understanding and from here students will feel excited to answer the questions. While for their assignment, I asked my students to find any information about maths from the internet.

    Science and maths is present in everywhere in our life not to forget in design and technology subject, almost all topics are covered on science and maths. Below are the listed of some topics that I believed covered by science and maths.

    - Plastics;
    - Metals;
    - Woods;
    - Orthographic projection;
    - Isometric projection;

    1. Materials that normally used are plastics, woods and metals. Let say plastics, in order to cut plastic, students should be able to know the dimensions and deep to be cut off. In this case students should applied their mathematical calculation knowledge,

    2. In order to bend the plastic, students should know the time limit in order to form that particular shape.

    3. Measuring tape is being use to measure the length.

    4. Apron that made up from cotton also part of the science subject.

    5. Orthographic projection is to illustrate the object into different types of views. In order to do it, students should have a good mathematics to apply the correct shape and diagram.

    Beside that some media also be added to enhance the teaching technique such as:

    1. Shows the students some useful videos from the popular website : http://www.youtube.com from here, students can learn through visualise how does things be done.

    2. By adding more pictures into sideshow presentation also part of my teaching.

    3. By using a smartboard is also a good practice to let the students to come to the front and use pen provided by smartboard to tackle the correct answer.

    4. Animated gif files also added to presentation powerpoint.

    5. Flash animated also added to presentation powerpoint.

    I not teaching science and mathematics my school but I know some lesson plan in teaching of science and mathematics subject. In our school, mathematics and science are core subjects that mean, students are compulsory to take it.

    For science subject, teacher used their lab as a class so student will learn everything the theory and practical in lab. Every science subject, students have to present in the science lab and teacher waiting the students. In the practical session, students will bring their own model such as plant for experiment.

    For SPN21, mathematics became more challenging subject. Students more expose on practicing written question and drilling instead of hand on. Mathematics teacher also need use technology to improve and effectiveness the teaching and learning. In our school, mathematics teachers had given permission to use the ICT Lab.

I do teach maths in my commercial studies subject for example topic banking and finance on how to calculate bank loan, investment banking etc. Therefore, we are not only use maths in school but it is everywhere even in our daily activity we do use maths.

    In term of technology, I always used technology in my teaching especially word processing and typing skills subject. In the other hand, for my commercial studies subject I more prefer on “chalk and talk” and using student centered system for example group project, activity, group discussion and critical thinking. I only used technology when it comes to topic that relate with technology. For instance online banking, I will show my students using Internet on how the online banking works. In addition, sometimes I do used a ‘’youtube’’ website to show them some videos that relate with our topic. By showing them a video it can help the students to understand more rather than let them imagine or think how those things work.

    August 10, 2010 at 2:59 pm (Uncategorized) · Edit

    Websites for Mathematics: http://www.apples4theteacher.com, http://www.coolmathsforkids.com and http://www.mathplayground.com

    Websites for Science: http://kids.lovetoknow.com, http://www.apples4theteacher.com

    Usually http://www.youtube.com is use to show the pupils video about the fact, especially in Science.

    Science and Mathematics are the favourite subject in the school because pupils usually did practical. They seem to fun in those subjects. Technology such as teaching using the projector, computer and internet connection are some of the causes pupils love the subjects. In the school, ICT Across Curriculum was introduced by weeks such as Mathematics weeks, Science weeks, English weeks and Bahasa Melayu weeks. Teacher won’t miss their opprtunity using the ICT as their teaching aids. Sometimes although the weeks belong to the other subject, the teacher tried to find empty slot to use the ICT for their teaching. All technologies provided in the school was used wisely.

    Good ‘O’ level grade in maths and physics or combined science is required to enter a course in aircraft department MTSSR

    Most subjects require a good knowledge of mathematics to understand electrical fundamentals. electronic theory. aircraft instrumentation, aircraft navigation around the globe and theory of flight.

    A good knowledge in science is also important in understanding of pressure, temperature and density in the atmosphere to make sure instrumentation is working perfectly in high altitude and also in the study of aircraft materials to avoid massive corrosion.

    So most subjects require mathematics and science and the use of ICT to improve the understanding of students.

    We have an ICT room in my department

    In life we attached with mathematics : time ,money , measurement , and everyday life. We were teach maths with talk and chalk, practices on how to do the mathematics and memories the time table and formulas in order to understand more on mathematics subjects.We were given online quiz /exercise using internet. Calculator and computer desktop as part of technology. There are using projector and also smart board to enhance the technique and effective learning.The other method of introducing effective learning the students were asked to watch a video from internet given by the teacher. There were asked to solve the problems in groups discussion among themselves without asking the teacher.

    First of all, I’m not teaching in school and I don’t have any teaching background.

    However we do use Mathematics in the Office for calculating budget and expenditure, total ongoing projects and so on. We use software like MS Excel for monitoring budget and updating project’s status, e.g. total workdone, total contract sum, previous payment, % of retention money and so on. This software is very useful as it provide lots of formula to calculate e.g. autosum, count, percentage, average, autofilter, sorting and so on.

  45. The virtual experiment from http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks2bitesize/science/physical_processes/changing_circuits/play.shtml

    About a series of open and close circuit.

    How it works?
    When the switch is off, meaning it is an open circuit and no current passes through it. On the other hand, when the switch is on, the voltage from the cell passes current and voltage through the bulb and turn on the lights.

    If we used wire, the bulb won’t glow brightly but if we used battery it will glow the bulb depends on the voltage on the battery.

    From the experiment, the students learn how the circuit works and the voltage can increase the glowing on the bulb.

    Introductions about the topic:

    Heat melts a solid and turns it into a liquid. Cooling freezes a liquid into a solid.

    Different solids melt at different temperatures, some high some low. These are called their melting points.

    Heat can change solids into liquids or gases. When we cool something we take heat away from it. Cooling changes a gas into a liquid, and a liquid into a solid.

  53. Helping plants grow well
    Introduction
    Plants need air, light, warmth, water and nutrients to be healthy. If they are healthy, they can continue making their own food through photosynthesis. You can also know about the important parts of a plant – roots, leaves and the stem.
    This section includes:
    • What a plant needs to grow
    • What different parts of plants do
    What a plant needs to grow
    A plant needs air,light,warmth,water and nutrients to grow well.A healthy plant is upright with green leaves.A seed will not produce a plant at all if it is kept too cold. The seed needs warmth to germinate and start to grow into a healthy plant.A plant that is kept in a dark place will grow tall and spindly in search of light and then become weak and die.A plant that is not watered will have a weak stem and dried up leaves and will eventually die.
    What different parts of plants do
    • The roots of a plant take up water and nutrients from the soil. The roots also keep the plant steady and upright in the soil; they “anchor” the plant.
    • The stem carries water and nutrients to different parts of the plant.
    • The leaves use light from the sun, along with carbon dioxide from the air and water to make food for the plant. This process is called photosynthesis.
    Must do:
    What happen to plant if you don’t water it?
    Should do:
    What happen to the condition are too hot and cold?
    Could do:
    What if there is no sunlight and how is these affect the plant?

    Changing Circuits

    Q: Make a circuit with one very brightly lit bulb that can be turned on and off.

    The circuit consist of choice of two types of battery, which is 1.5Volt or 3.0Volt, normal wire or twisted wire, choice of one bulb or two bulb and ON/OFF switch.

    The bulb brightness depends on the battery voltage, if you put 1.5Volt battery the bulb is less bright. If you put 3Volt battery the bulb will be brighter. The reason, because with 3Volt the current flow is higher. Current is equal to voltage divided by resistor.

    Assume the bulb resistor is two ohms

    Therefore,

    I = V/R = 3/2 = 1.5 Amps

    I = V/R = 1.5/2 = 0.75 Amps

    I = Current, V = Voltage and R = Resistor

    So, according to ohms laws, the higher the current, the brighter the light.

    Q1: Can you make the light bulbs working and see the difference if you put 1.5Volt battery or 3.0Volt battery.

    Q2: Why do you think the light is not ON if you put the switch to OFF?

    Q3: Why do you think that the light brightness is the same when you use normal wire and twisted wire?

    This experiment will help you determine the relationship between voltage (V), amperage (I) and resistance (R). This relationship is called Ohm’s Law

    Please go to this website:
    http://jersey.uoregon.edu/vlab/Voltage/volt1.html

    Objectives:
    - Students will learn relations on the Ohms laws (Voltage, current and resistor)
    - Students will develop their thinking skills on how to make the circuit works

    The problem consists of two parts:

    1. Find the formula which describes Ohm’s Law; that is, find the mathematical relationship between voltage (V), amperage (I), and resistance (R).

    2. Determine the amperage of the lightbulb.

    Instructions:
    The first part will be discovered through a trial-and-error experiment.
    - choose from a variety of batteries
    - add resistor/s to the circuit.
    - Turn on the switch, allowing current to flow through the circuit.
    - If the resistance is too low, too much current, and bulb will explode.
    - If the resistance is too great, the lightbulb will not receive enough current, and will not light.
    - If the resistance is just right, the lightbulb will light up. (Note: real light bulbs are not perfect ohmic resistors as is the case here and will light partially with any amount of current).

    The second experiment show how the liquid heat up and changes into vapour (gases) where the gases move upward and fill up all the empty spaces (two of the beakers). These movement of air equalized the amount of air to each of the beakers. The air move to the hole between the beakers. Then when we cool down the air vapour, it shows the beaker content equal amount of water.

    The experiment show as liquid cool down (freezing ) and change into solid. But if it heat up (melting point ) it change into gases and return back to liquid when it cool down (cooling ).
