    The importance of ICT

With the advancement of technology in this modern era, more and more people have come to realize the significant of multimedia. As a matter of fact, many schools have taken the initiatives to implement the integration of ICT as part of the school’s curriculum. Now, our main question would be: “ What are the benefits of getting children to be computer-literate as well as getting them be familiar with the use of multimedia?”.
For a start, by using ICT, children are not only able to gain access to various important information but as a matter of fact, they can acquire a number of essential skills such as the ability to interpret/present data with the use of certain software, to allow the exchange of great ideas among themselves, to let them explore, organize and construct their learning in the sense of collaboration.

As for the teachers’ roles on this matter, they too can help the less-motivated ones to gain the necessary skills in this field. Below are some useful tips that can be used to create a positive learning environment of ICT for the pupils:
    • Be prepared for the unexpected – In other words, teachers need to prepare themselves for any possibilities and challenges ahead in the course of ICT lessons.
    • Taking consideration of the pupils’ interests – Teachers need to be sensitive and up-to-date with what the children are currently interested in, be it their favourite cartoons, favourite sportsmen, favourite TV shows and so forth.
    • Teaching ICT in the positive manner – In order to get the children to be more willing to learn ICT, they should be allowed to discover the importance of ICT in their own time.
    • ICT should be seen as a learning tool rather than a big challenge – We need to let the children know that ICT is not as complicated as it sounds but instead it is actually a fun and interactive way to learn!

In short, pupils and teachers alike can greatly benefit from the use of ICT and therefore, this art of learning should be improved from time to time.

Robots – Can they really imitate human behaviour?

I came across a website which I think is quite interesting. It is about a robot, a creation of Fujitsu. It is said that this robot can actually perform human actions! Hmm..is it possible?

Have a quick look to the website below:)

    Computer Animation

When we say the word ‘animation’ undeniably the first thing that comes to our minds will be about moving pictures or images and they can be anything from comic strips to video games, animated videos and so forth. By a clear definition, it is actually the creation of a series of images through the use of computers. As a matter of fact, animation is popularly used in producing cartoons as well as films.

As computer animation has gained a great deal of attention in the world of entertainment, many film-makers have actually in fact resorted to use this technology in creating special effects for their films. Some examples would be Shrek, Titanic, The Lord of The Rings, Star Wars and other movies/films. What is so special about computer animation is that it allows the creation of images that look so convincingly real that sometimes we have a difficult time to differentiate what is real and what is not.

Having said that, why not we take the time to explore the websites below and take a peek on what it is like behind this marvelous form of art? =)

    Aye aye mates!

There sure are a lot of fun pc games online e.g. Morrowind (is that the correct spelling?) & Ragnarok Online (well-known as RO). However there are some educational ones too.

Here is one of the sites that I have found on the internet that features online educational games which are meant for the Primary schoolers.

    External Hard Disks

Here I am going to share some bit of information about external hard disks.
First of all, what is an external hard disk? An external hard disk is a type of hard disk drive which is connected to a computer externally, and may be portable. It is considered as the secondary memory device that is used for the primary data storage. RAM is the primary memory. However because the RAM is the primary memory, so it cannot be used for the purpose of the permanent data storage, hence the external hard disk is necessarily needed as the secondary memory device for the purpose of permanent data storage.
External hard disk has its internal structure similar to the hard disk drives and in fact, it includes a normal hard disk drive which is mounted on a disk enclosure. Even though external hard disk are aimed to be portable, the data cannot be secured on them due to their insufficient shock protection when compared to digital portable media storage devices such as flash memories (pendrives) and memory cards. Nonetheless, external hard disk costs less than memory cards or flash memories of same storage size and it is the only portable media storage option available in the size of hundreds of gigabytes.
Most external hard disks are compatible with the three major operating systems that are Windows, Max OS (Unix) and Linux. They are also able to run different file systems such as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled), FAT and NTFS. External hard disks can be partitioned and formatted using Disk Management (Windows Vista) and other programs for Mac OS X users.
Some of the companies that manufacture hard disks and are in international market are Dell, Hitachi, IBM and Toshiba.

A USEFUL PROGRAMME TO ENHANCE INTEREST IN SCIENCE

Realising the importance of Science and technology in our everyday’s life as well as that concerning the development of our country, MOE has taken some positive approaches toward this matter.

Based on the article published in Borneo Bulletin dated 20th November 2007 by James Kon, he stated that “ The Minister of Education had spoken on the problems of students in achieving better grades in science and the decrease in the number of students taking up the science field.”

He also further added that in order to strengthen the MOE’s desire in increasing students’ interest in science, it has allowed STEP centre (The Science, Technology and Environmental Partnership) to accomplish the task by setting up a necessary programme. This useful programme is called “ Program Peningkatan Pencapaian Sains” or Improvement for achievement in science programme.

As a matter of fact, a number of schools have take part in this programme namely, Sekolah Rendah Pengiran Anak Puteri Besar, Sekolah Rendah Pehin Dato Jamil and so forth. The writer has also mentioned that nursing college was their choice of destination because the topics they learn in primary science subjects ( Healthy Habits and Knowing Your Food) are somehow linked with courses taught at the college. Basically the trip was not only meant to expose them to new ideas/knowledge but also to give them a worthwhile experience.

    HIGH-TECH WORLD

As we all have known, we are now living in the fast-paced era where previously complicated tasks can now be done by simple clicks on the mouse. Paying bills, filling out forms, sending files or messages and a number of other things. How sophisticated the technology nowadays we may say and yes it is truly indeed. In other words, we are living in this high-tech world where it is populated by knowledge workers.

Things have changed since 20 years ago, with better speed and efficiency, now the knowledge workers can even produce goods/services twice times better than they did in the past and all of this with the help of computers as the result of improved technology.

The importance of this matter is also highlighted on His Majesty’s Titah ( Based on Borneo Bulletin dated 11th November 2007 by Azaraimy HH), “ The migration towards a knowledge-based society is becoming more relevant because of the new opportunities presented in the many community affairs and activities.” With that, we should now be prepared to step ahead in the same level as other developed nations in ICT field. If we are able to achieve this goal then we might also at the same time helping to provide more employment opportunities in technology sector, which is already an important aspect towards nation-building.

    WORD PROCESSING

With the advent of computers, we no longer use typewriters as much as we did years ago. I must say that this really benefits us all even though there might be minimal drawbacks.

First and foremost, in terms of speed and ease, it is definitely a plus-point as we can now produce our materials with such a better standard. Errors can also be easily detected and corrected. Basically the word processing tools are a great help too. For example, Word count helps us to keep track of how many words that we have typed in the Microsoft Word. The copy and paste functions also enable us to make copies of our documents in which this helps us to save time without having to re-do the document one by one. Actually there are other more useful functions in word processing.

In short, the use of word processing definitely meets the requirements of tech-savvy people.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SCIENCE FOR CHILDREN

Science is certainly a very fascinating subject to learn as it arouses children’s curiousity about the nature and whatever happens in our every day life. For instance, it helps the children to understand better about their own sense organs, living and non-living things, energy, electricity and so on.

In addition to that, nowadays, children can learn Science in a more interactive way as the usage of ICT is highly encouraged. Moreover, learning Science is also very beneficial as it has been linked with other subjects such as Geography, Mathematics, English and Pelajaran Am. This will certainly help the children in so many ways as they get to learn many things at a time.

In conclusion, we as teachers, should try to make learning Science as an enjoyable experience and the one that the children will remember for a life time because we must be aware that learning Science is an on-going process and it will continue even when these children have step out of the primary school. Therefore, it is definitely a wise move to help these children to understand the importance of Science.

    Tricks for folder, file

Generally Windows will allow us to install numerous of fonts ( also known as typefaces). Even though fonts can be interesting but we should remember that each font needs an entry in the Windows registry. Therefore, if we install many types of fonts in the system, this will affect its performance. In order to prevent this, what we need is to install the fonts that we need most.
